New York City Mother Remains Unconscious 10 Months After Brutal Attack by Estranged Husband

A New York City mother of three, Sophia Giraldo, remains unconscious 10 months after being attacked by her estranged husband, Stephen Giraldo. The incident occurred on December 27, 2022, when Stephen ran over Sophia with an SUV while their children were in the back seat. He then stabbed her in the chest. Stephen Giraldo, 37, was sentenced to 25 years in prison after pleading guilty to attempted murder.

According to Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz’s office, Stephen Giraldo told their children, ages 11, 9, and 6, to “keep your seat belt on” right before accelerating the white Ford Explorer. Sophia Giraldo suffered severe injuries, including neurological damage, broken bones in her legs, and a punctured liver. She has not regained consciousness since the attack.

Stephen Giraldo stayed at the scene and called 911 after stabbing his wife. Prosecutors stated that he told the operators, “I think I killed my wife.” Initially charged with attempted murder, assault, reckless endangerment, endangering the welfare of a child, and criminal possession of a weapon, Stephen Giraldo pleaded guilty to attempted murder last month.

Sophia Giraldo had filed for divorce last year and had previously sought refuge in a domestic violence shelter with her children in 2019. She had a self-help podcast called “The Unfiltered and Free Podcast,” where she discussed her experiences and offered advice on living life after betrayal and abuse.

Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz described the case as one of the most brutal they have prosecuted, condemning Stephen Giraldo’s actions as unconscionable.
