Mother Fatally Shot, Children Injured in Bronx Apartment; Suspect at Large

A tragic incident unfolded in a Bronx apartment early Saturday morning, resulting in the death of a mother and injuries to her two children. The New York Police Department (NYPD) is currently on the hunt for the suspected gunman, who is believed to be the victim’s boyfriend, according to authorities and sources familiar with the investigation.

The 40-year-old mother suffered a gunshot wound to the torso, while her 8-year-old son was shot in the left arm and her 16-year-old son was struck in the buttocks. The incident occurred at approximately 5 a.m. inside an apartment located at 226 East 203rd St., near the Grand Concourse. Emergency responders made valiant efforts to save the mother’s life, but she was pronounced dead at 6:12 a.m., as confirmed by the NYPD.

Both children were immediately transported to nearby hospitals for medical treatment. The 8-year-old was taken to Jacobi Hospital, while the 16-year-old received care at St. Barnabas Hospital. Fortunately, their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening, and they are expected to survive.

Evidence of the tragic event was visible within the building, as a trail of blood could be seen from the entrance, leading through the lobby, up the stairs, and ultimately to the fifth floor where the shooting took place. A neighbor residing on the fourth floor reported hearing a heated argument between a man and a woman prior to the fatal incident. “There was a lot of yelling, between a man and a woman going ah ah ah. I didn’t hear the shot. It’s sad,” said Haruka Arjona, 34.

The family had been residing in the building for approximately two years, according to another neighbor who chose to remain anonymous. Describing the victim as friendly, the neighbor mentioned that they would often exchange greetings.

The NYPD is actively searching for a male suspect, estimated to be between 30 and 35 years old. The individual was last seen wearing a black hat, black jacket, and brown boots. Further details regarding the suspect’s relationship with the victims have not been disclosed by the police at this time.
