Mississippi Assistant District Attorney Charged with Contempt of Court for Intoxicated Behavior

DeSoto County Assistant District Attorney Thomas Waller, 56, has been charged with contempt of court after allegedly appearing “visibly intoxicated” during a courtroom proceeding, impeding the conduct of court business. Waller’s arrest took place around 5 p.m. on Thursday, as confirmed by documents obtained by WREG.

Following the incident, Waller tendered his resignation from his position on Friday. DeSoto County District Attorney Matthew Barton acknowledged the situation, expressing his disappointment and emphasizing that Waller’s behavior did not align with the high standards expected of the office. Barton refrained from commenting on Waller’s physical, emotional, or mental health but expressed hope that he would receive the necessary support during this challenging time.

According to court documents, Waller exhibited signs of intoxication, including a strong odor of alcohol on his breath. His incoherent arguments further hindered the proceedings. Waller was subsequently released from the DeSoto County jail at approximately 1 a.m. on Friday.
