Michigan Defensive Line Coach Greg Scruggs Suspended Indefinitely Following Suspected Drunk Driving Arrest

Michigan defensive line coach Greg Scruggs has been suspended indefinitely by the football program and athletic department following his arrest for suspected drunk driving. The 33-year-old Scruggs was taken into custody at 3 a.m. on Saturday by Ann Arbor police on charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated.

Wolverines coach Sherrone Moore, who recently replaced Jim Harbaugh, issued a statement acknowledging Scruggs’ “unfortunate mistake” and emphasizing that he has taken full responsibility for his actions. Moore expressed disappointment in the situation but made no excuses for Scruggs’ behavior.

Scruggs, a former NFL defensive end, joined the Michigan coaching staff after serving as the defensive line coach for the University of Wisconsin during the previous season. Prior to that, he worked as an assistant defensive line coach for the New York Jets in 2022 and spent two seasons with the Cincinnati Bearcats.

During his college years, Scruggs played as a defensive lineman at the University of Louisville from 2008 to 2011. Coincidentally, Moore was starting his coaching career as a graduate assistant at the same time.

Drafted by the Seattle Seahawks in the seventh round of the 2012 NFL Draft, Scruggs played a total of 18 games over four seasons with the Seahawks and the Chicago Bears.

The Michigan football program and athletic department are currently conducting a thorough review of the details surrounding Scruggs’ arrest. As of now, his suspension remains indefinite.

  1. While it is unfortunate that Coach Scruggs has been arrested for suspected drunk driving, it is important to consider that this incident should not define his entire coaching career. People make mistakes, and it is possible that Coach Scruggs deeply regrets his actions and is committed to learning from this experience. Suspending him indefinitely may seem like a harsh punishment without giving him an opportunity for redemption or rehabilitation. Instead, the athletic department could have considered implementing a strict disciplinary action plan, such as mandatory counseling or alcohol
