Megan Thee Stallion, the talented hip-hop star, bravely expressed the lasting impact of the traumatic incident where she was shot in the feet by rapper Tory Lanez three years ago. During Lanez’s sentencing, Megan’s powerful written statement, read by Los Angeles County Deputy District Attorney Kathy Ta, detailed her ongoing struggle for peace and healing. Despite slowly regaining strength, Megan candidly admitted that she will never be the same.

Having testified during the trial, Megan faced the difficult decision of appearing in person to deliver her statement but ultimately chose to protect her emotional wellbeing by not being in the same room as Lanez. She made it clear that her absence should not be misconstrued as indifference and urged Judge David Herriford to impose a strong sentence.

During the proceedings, a chaplain from Los Angeles County jail attested to Lanez’s efforts in leading daily prayer groups that have effectively diffused tensions in the protective custody unit where he is currently held.

Judge Herriford meticulously considered the factors at hand. While recognizing Megan’s vulnerability as a victim, he concluded that Lanez’s actions were not exceptionally cruel or callous. The judge acknowledged Lanez’s charitable endeavors and positive community reputation, but also took into account allegations of intimidation towards Megan through social media and song lyrics casting doubt on her shooting incident. Although highlighting Lanez’s lack of remorse, Herriford emphasized his right to maintain his innocence, ultimately leaving his impending decision undisclosed.

In her powerful statement, Megan pointed out Lanez’s absence of remorse and his attempts to exploit his childhood trauma as factors that further informed her expectations for justice. Sonstar Peterson also extended his apologies to the judge for his emotional outburst following the verdict, explaining the overwhelming anguish he experienced.
