Matt Araiza Signs with Chiefs for NFL Return

Matt Araiza, known as the “Punt God,” is set to make his NFL return after signing with the Kansas City Chiefs, as announced by his agency JL Sports on Thursday. The punter, who was drafted by the Buffalo Bills in the sixth round of the 2022 NFL Draft, was released by the team just before the start of the 2022 season. Araiza and some of his former college teammates had faced allegations of gang rape at an off-campus party held at San Diego State University.

In late 2022, San Diego’s district attorney, Summer Stephan, declared that Araiza would not be charged in connection with the case. Stephan expressed doubts about the ability to secure a conviction due to insufficient evidence. It was later revealed that prosecutors determined Araiza was not present at the party during the alleged incident.

Araiza’s agency took to Twitter to announce the signing, expressing gratitude to the Chiefs organization for providing him with this opportunity. Araiza himself issued a statement through his agency, expressing pride and honor in joining the Chiefs and thanking his family and friends for their unwavering support during the challenging past 18 months.

The Chiefs, recent Super Bowl champions, have had Tommy Townsend as their punter for the past four seasons. Townsend, who was named a first-team All-Pro in 2022, is currently an unrestricted free agent.
