Massachusetts Officer Not Charged in Fatal Shooting of White Supremacist Nathan Allen

Suffolk District Attorney Kevin Hayden announced on Tuesday that Winthrop Police Sgt. Nicholas Bettano will not face criminal charges in the fatal shooting of 28-year-old Nathan Allen. Allen, a white supremacist, had fatally shot two innocent Black men moments before the incident.

In June 2021, surveillance camera footage captured Allen walking barefoot near a cemetery before stealing a truck and crashing it into a building. After emerging from the vehicle, Allen fatally shot another individual and fled the scene. He then discarded the firearm.

Bettano arrived at the location after the second shooting had occurred. Allen refused to drop his firearm when commanded by Bettano, leading the officer to fire four rounds at him. Authorities later discovered evidence at Allen’s home related to the shooting spree.

Suffolk District Attorney Kevin Hayden commended Bettano’s actions, stating that the officer’s response was justified and likely prevented further injuries or deaths resulting from Allen’s racially-motivated rampage.
