Kevin Sumlin, an assistant football coach for the University of Maryland Terrapins, was arrested for DUI in the Tampa Bay area over the weekend, according to arrest records.
The arrest occurred at 12:40 a.m. on Saturday by the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office. It took place at 5951 North U.S. Highway 301, a location identified as a RaceTrac gas station on Google Maps.
Sumlin refused to take a breathalyzer test, as indicated in the records. He was subsequently released from jail on a $500 bond.
Sumlin’s employer is listed as the University of Maryland in the arrest records. He serves as an Associate Head Coach, Co-Offensive Coordinator, and Tight Ends Coach for the football team.
In response to the incident, the University of Maryland issued a statement, acknowledging awareness of the situation and noting it as an ongoing investigation with no further comment.
Kevin Sumlin, with previous head coaching roles at the University of Houston, Texas A&M, and the University of Arizona, joined the Maryland Terrapins coaching staff earlier this year. The team, which had a bye week during the weekend, currently holds a 5-2 record.
