In a tense standoff on Friday afternoon, a man identified as Demetrius Nicholas, wanted on a murder charge, fired at a DeKalb County deputy in the East Ponce Village apartments, Stone Mountain. The incident unfolded near Juliette Road and Wood Bend Drive at around 3 p.m.
While the deputy wasn’t actively pursuing Nicholas, he recognized and approached him. This prompted Nicholas to open fire. As a result, a deputy was injured, possibly by a bullet or shattered glass from his vehicle. The injured deputy was promptly taken to a hospital and has since been discharged.
SKYFOX 5’s aerial coverage around 4 p.m. showed a heavy police presence surrounding the apartment complex. Authorities, including officers from over ten local, state, and federal agencies, expanded their search after reports indicated Nicholas had fled into neighboring woods.
Nicholas is described as being 5’7″, weighing approximately 155 pounds, with short dread-like black hair. DeKalb County authorities have urged residents to stay clear of the area, secure their homes, and report any sightings of the suspect to 911 immediately.
