Man with Checkered Past Punches San Jose Mayor’s Bodyguard During Interview

San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan’s bodyguard was punched by a man with a checkered past during a news interview, according to court documents obtained by KRON4. The incident occurred on April 23 in downtown San Jose, where a KRON4 reporter was conducting an on-camera interview with Mayor Mahan.

The assailant, identified as Wesley David Pollard, 35, is currently out of jail on $0 bail and is facing battery charges for the altercation. Pollard, who moved from Georgia to California two years ago, has a history of run-ins with the law, as revealed by court records.

In October 2023, Pollard was arrested in Mountain View for squatting in a vacant apartment. He claimed to have rented the space through “AirBnB” but presented a fake lease contract to the police. Pollard was suspected of stealing utilities worth over $500, leading to his arrest on suspicion of burglary.

In September 2023, Pollard was arrested in Sunnyvale for squatting in a hotel room at the Grand Hotel on El Camino Real. He was found sleeping in a room that he had not booked as a guest.

On November 7, 2023, Pollard was discovered smoking cigarettes and using his laptop in an Adobe office building in Mountain View. When confronted by an employee, he falsely claimed to work for the company and was there for a meeting. Police were called, and Pollard was arrested for burglary after being found inside the women’s restroom.

Pollard’s criminal history extends back to Georgia, where he faced charges of assault and resisting arrest with violence. He currently has an outstanding warrant in Georgia, as confirmed by the San Jose Police Department.
