PHILADELPHIA — Jose Flores-Huerta, a man convicted of aiding two individuals in their escape from prison while he was in custody, has been sentenced in both cases. Flores-Huerta, 36, received a sentence of 11 months to 23 months plus probation in the escape case, according to court documents. The incident occurred at the Philadelphia Industrial Correction Center in May 2023 when Ameen Hurst, 18, and Nasir Grant, 24, cut a hole in a fence surrounding a recreation yard. The two men remained at large for nearly 19 hours before their absence was discovered. They were later recaptured, with Hurst facing charges related to four homicides and other crimes.
In addition to the escape case, Flores-Huerta and Omar Arce, 35, pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and aggravated assault in a fatal beating that took place outside Pat’s King of Steaks in September 2021. The incident unfolded as soccer fans engaged in a brawl following a match. Isidro Cortes, a 28-year-old New York accountant, lost his life in the altercation, while his father and another man were hospitalized.
Both Flores-Huerta and Arce were sentenced to 11 months to 23 months in prison, along with five years of probation, for their involvement in the brawl. They are eligible for immediate release on parole. During the sentencing, both defendants expressed remorse, briefly speaking through an interpreter.
