Man Found Dead Near Horsetooth Reservoir Was Shot, Investigation Underway

The Larimer County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed that the man found dead near Horsetooth Reservoir on September 10 was shot. The victim, 64-year-old Paul Gallenstein, was found lying on the Foothills Trail near the reservoir. An autopsy revealed that his cause of death was a gunshot injury, according to a press release from the LCSO.

The investigation is ongoing, with authorities working to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident. Despite an extensive search of the area, no weapon has been located. The search efforts were hindered by dense foliage and heavy rainfall in the days following the incident.

Captain Bobby Moll of the LCSO expressed condolences to Paul’s friends and family during this time of grief and uncertainty. Investigators are actively seeking witnesses, information, and evidence related to the case. They recently located a man who was walking a dog on the trail that morning and assisted EMS personnel. Authorities hope to gather critical details from him.

The LCSO is urging anyone who found a gun or other items on the Reservoir Ridge Foothills Trail that may be connected to the case to contact them immediately. Investigator Ryan Adams can be reached at 970-498-5174. Those who wish to remain anonymous can contact Crime Stoppers of Larimer County at 970-221-6868.
