In a tragic incident, sheriff’s deputies in Lancaster shot and killed a man who allegedly charged at them with two machetes. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department reported that the encounter took place on Tuesday morning at an Albertsons store on 20th Street West, where the man had been accused of harassing shoppers.
According to officials, deputies approached the man in an attempt to engage him in conversation and de-escalate the situation. However, the suspect became increasingly agitated and retrieved the two machetes from his backpack. Ignoring repeated commands to drop the weapons, he proceeded to enter the Albertsons store.
Deputies resorted to using “less-lethal” methods, including stun guns, in an effort to subdue the man. Despite their attempts, the suspect suddenly charged at the deputies, prompting three of them to open fire. The man, believed to be between 35 and 40 years old, was transported to a local hospital but was pronounced dead. His identity has not been disclosed as of Tuesday evening.
Fortunately, no bystanders or law enforcement officers were injured during the incident. The two machetes were recovered at the scene. Investigators later linked the suspect to a separate stabbing incident at a local gas station earlier that day. The victim of the stabbing sustained non-life-threatening injuries and received medical treatment.
As per standard procedure, the sheriff’s homicide and internal affairs bureaus will conduct an investigation into the shooting. The Office of the Inspector General will oversee the investigative process, ensuring transparency and accountability. Additionally, the L.A. County district attorney’s office will conduct a legal analysis to determine the justifiability of the shooting and whether any charges will be filed.
