Oakland resident Gregory Szugyi, 61, has been formally charged with murder and possession of a firearm by a felon in connection with the fatal shooting of Antonio Poole, 36, in the Jingletown area. The incident occurred on April 11 at approximately 3:36 p.m. in the 800 block of Kennedy Street, just south of Interstate 880.
Authorities have not disclosed any prior relationship between Szugyi and Poole. The accused was apprehended on April 12 in the 400 block of Embarcadero in Oakland and is currently being held without bail at Santa Rita Jail.
While a witness claimed that the shooting may have been prompted by an attempted robbery targeting Szugyi and others, law enforcement officials have yet to corroborate this account. Following the shooting, Szugyi fled the scene in a truck, which has not been recovered at this time.
Upon Szugyi’s arrest, investigators executed a search of his recreational vehicle, where they discovered evidence linking him to the shooting. The specific nature of this evidence has not been disclosed by the police.
Court records reveal that Szugyi was previously convicted of felony grand theft of real property in March 2017 and was subsequently placed on probation.
