Man Arrested for Vandalizing and Stealing American Flag at Disabled American Veterans Chapter in Florida

A man has been apprehended by authorities after he was caught on surveillance cameras vandalizing and stealing an American flag at a Disabled American Veterans (DAV) chapter in Titusville, Florida. The incident, which occurred on Tuesday evening, was captured on video and shared on social media by the nonprofit organization.

The surveillance footage shows a man wearing a yellow t-shirt and jeans carefully surveying the flag pole before proceeding to vandalize it. Armed with what appeared to be a knife, he cut down the flag pole strings, causing the American flag to fall to the ground. The man then crumpled up the flag before damaging an outdoor grill and seating areas that were regularly used by veterans.

Commander John Dunn of the DAV expressed his heartbreak and disappointment upon witnessing the flag being desecrated. He emphasized that such crimes divert resources that could otherwise be used to support veterans. However, Dunn’s anger turned to gratitude as the community rallied behind the nonprofit.

Within hours of the incident, the community’s support was evident on social media, with individuals quickly identifying the suspect. The man’s name and location were shared, leading to his swift capture by the Titusville Police Department on Friday afternoon. Jonathan Wayne Smyth, a 42-year-old resident of Mims, Florida, now faces charges of burglary, criminal mischief, and petit theft.

Dunn took to Facebook to express his appreciation for the outpouring of support. He revealed that community members had donated a brand new Pit Boss pellet grill to replace the one destroyed during the incident. Additionally, two other couples have offered to donate grills to the chapter.

The Titusville Police Department confirmed that Smyth was taken into custody without incident and is currently being held without bond at the Brevard County Jail.
