A man has been arrested and charged with unlawful possession of a weapon in the aftermath of the deadly shooting that occurred during the Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl parade. Jose Castillo, 36, was celebrating the team’s victory at Union Station when the gunfire erupted. Witnesses claim that Castillo picked up a Glock 22 from the ground, which was allegedly dropped by one of the shooting suspects.
Upon noticing the weapon, police ordered Castillo to the ground. He complied and tossed the gun aside before being taken into custody. Reports indicate that Castillo exhibited signs of intoxication, including a strong smell of alcohol, slurred speech, and bloodshot eyes.
Court documents reveal that Castillo, a convicted felon, stated he believed the gun had been dropped by an officer and intended to turn it over to the police. However, authorities have not connected him to the mass shooting incident. Two juveniles were also arrested in connection with the shooting, which resulted in the death of Lisa Lopez-Galvan, a mother of two, and left 22 others injured.
A friend who was with Castillo at the parade defended his actions, stating that they were not involved in the altercation and that Castillo had simply stumbled upon the weapon while trying to exit the area. The friend insisted that Castillo was only trying to help.
Castillo is currently being held in custody on $25,000 bail, according to county records. A gunshot residue test was conducted on his hands, but the results have not been disclosed by the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office. It is worth noting that Castillo has a prior felony conviction for marijuana possession in Kansas.
