A confrontation during an attempted robbery led to both the maintenance worker and the perpetrator being shot in Waukegan on Tuesday morning. The incident unfolded at the Beechwood at the Preserve Apartments, located in the 3000 block of 8th Street, and drew a rapid response from local law enforcement and emergency services around 10:45 a.m.
Upon arrival, the Waukegan Police Department discovered two individuals with gunshot injuries. A 17-year-old male was located inside an apartment, suffering from a wound to his thigh. An officer administered a tourniquet to stem the bleeding until paramedics could take over the care.
The second victim, a 20-year-old maintenance employee of the apartment complex, was found by officers near a dumpster behind the building, also with a thigh wound. First aid was provided at the scene before his transportation to the hospital.
The maintenance worker reported to the police that he had been the target of an armed robbery by the 17-year-old, resulting in a struggle where he managed to wrest the gun away and shoot the assailant.
A witness corroborated the worker’s account to investigators, indicating the teenager had attempted to rob the older man, leading to the scuffle and subsequent shooting.
Both injured parties were taken to the hospital for their wounds. Law enforcement retrieved a firearm near the scene and a second gun from the apartment where the young suspect lived, along with ammunition.
