Kendrid Hamlin Sentenced to 27 Months for Assault on Rep. Angie Craig

Rep. Angie Craig, D-Minn.

Kendrid Khalil Hamlin, 27, was sentenced on Thursday to 27 months in prison for assaulting Democratic Representative Angie Craig in her Washington apartment’s elevator. Hamlin, who pleaded guilty to the February assault, expressed remorse in court, seeking mental health and substance abuse treatment.

U.S. District Judge James Boasberg recognized Hamlin’s challenging background and untreated mental illness as factors in his behavior but noted the severity of his actions. Craig recounted the traumatic incident, where Hamlin trapped her in the elevator, assaulted her, and only stopped after she defended herself with hot coffee. The aftermath of the attack left Craig with physical injuries and enduring mental and emotional trauma, exacerbated by death threats and forced relocation.

Hamlin’s attorney, Kathryn D’Adamo Guevara, emphasized his swift guilty plea and desire for treatment for schizophrenia and substance abuse. Both of Hamlin’s parents tearfully spoke to the judge about their struggles to secure effective treatment for their son, including times when he was homeless.

While the defense sought a lighter sentence of a year and a day with inpatient treatment, prosecutors recommended 39 months. Judge Boasberg proposed that Hamlin’s sentence be served in a Bureau of Prisons medical facility, considering his mental health needs.

The assault occurred when Craig encountered Hamlin in the lobby of her building. According to court documents, Hamlin followed her into the elevator, announced intentions to enter her apartment, and then physically assaulted her.

Hamlin’s criminal record includes previous convictions, such as assaulting a police officer. However, there was no indication that the attack on Craig was politically motivated. Representative Craig, who represents Minnesota’s 2nd District, recently secured a third term in a competitive race for a seat of high interest to both political parties.
