Authorities in Topeka, Kansas, have arrested Mickel Cherry, a 25-year-old man, in connection to the rape and murder of 5-year-old Zoey Felix. On Monday evening, officers responded to a medical emergency at a Topeka gas station, finding first responders trying to save the young girl. She was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Cherry was booked into the Shawnee County Jail early Tuesday on suspicion of first-degree murder and rape. His bond is set at $2 million. Booking records suggest Cherry was homeless. As of now, no formal charges have been filed against him.
Although officials confirmed Cherry was known to Zoey, details of their relationship were not provided. The cause of the girl’s death remains undisclosed.
CBS affiliate WIBW-TV reported from neighbors that Zoey’s home life was fraught with challenges. Her residence lacked basic amenities, and she was occasionally left unattended. Despite these hardships, a neighbor, Desiree Myles, described Zoey as a “loving girl” and mentioned the community’s collective care for her.
