Jets cornerback Tae Hayes was arrested in the early hours of Sunday morning in Decatur, Alabama, on a charge of marijuana possession, as confirmed by the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office. Hayes, 26, was subsequently booked and released after posting a $300 bond. The New York Jets, when contacted by The Post, provided a brief statement acknowledging the situation and refrained from further comment, citing the pending legal matter.
Hayes, a well-traveled defensive back, made a single appearance for the Jets during the 2023 season. After going undrafted in 2019 from Appalachian State, he has had stints with nine different NFL teams over the course of five years. In addition, Hayes achieved a USFL championship victory in 2022 as a member of the Birmingham Stallions. Throughout his NFL career, he has played in 14 games, without any starts.
The incident comes just ahead of the Jets veterans reporting to training camp on July 23 at their team facility in Florham Park, New Jersey. As the legal proceedings unfold, the Jets organization will likely monitor the situation closely to determine any potential consequences for Hayes.

While Tae Hayes’ arrest for marijuana possession is unfortunate, it highlights the need for a more progressive approach to drug policies, especially when it comes to professional athletes. Instead of punishing players for using marijuana, sports organizations should consider implementing a harm reduction approach.
One potential solution could be to follow the example of the National Basketball Association (NBA), which has a more lenient stance on marijuana use. The NBA does not randomly test players for marijuana during the season and only imposes penalties if a player tests
