Intruder Shouts Mayor’s Name During Break-In at Los Angeles Mayor’s Residence

In a shocking incident last month, an intruder broke into the residence of Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, shouting her name repeatedly during the security breach. Multiple sources familiar with the ongoing investigation have revealed that Ephraim Hunter, 29, smashed a glass door at the Windsor Park mansion, leaving a trail of blood before being startled by the mayor’s German shepherd, Stax.

According to three law enforcement sources who requested anonymity, Hunter screamed “Karen!” multiple times as he attempted to access several bedrooms in Bass’ home around 6:40 a.m. on April 21. It remains unclear whether Hunter began shouting the mayor’s name before or after his detainment by the police. Prosecutors allege that Hunter targeted Bass, as he took actions indicating his knowledge of the mayor’s residence and his intent to find her.

However, confusion arose when Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón made public remarks suggesting that Hunter had planned or plotted an attack against Bass. A high-level Los Angeles police official expressed bewilderment, stating that the investigation did not uncover any evidence supporting such claims.

Hunter’s mother, Josephine Duah, disclosed in an interview with The Times that her son had been struggling with drug addiction and was hallucinating at the time of the incident. She mentioned that Hunter called her from jail, claiming he had disembarked a bus in Windsor Park without knowing his whereabouts and was fleeing from someone who intended to harm him. Another law enforcement source, speaking on condition of anonymity, stated that responding officers believed Hunter was under the influence of methamphetamine.

Hunter’s attorney, Howard Stern, refuted the district attorney’s office’s allegations, asserting that they had the case entirely wrong. Hunter, who had previously served seven years in prison in Massachusetts for assault, is scheduled to appear in court on June 3.

The break-in has raised concerns about security protocols at the mayor’s residence. Interim Los Angeles Police Chief Dominic Choi acknowledged that there were no officers present on the Getty House property during the incident due to a shift change, which was reportedly part of the LAPD’s scheduled security plan for Bass. Choi stated that the gap in coverage has since been addressed, but further scrutiny suggests additional failures in security measures.

Two law enforcement sources revealed that surveillance cameras were not being monitored when Hunter approached the property. Had they been monitored, Bass or the police could have been alerted to Hunter’s presence before he broke through the door. Chief Choi has declined to provide further details regarding security issues.

During the period between the break-in and the arrival of LAPD officers, Bass received assistance from her dog, Stax, a rescued German shepherd. Stax managed to interrupt and delay Hunter’s alleged attempts to break into bedrooms on the second floor of the residence. Fortunately, the dog did not bite Hunter, who was subsequently taken into custody without incident.
