Inside the Deadly Web: China’s Role in the Global Fentanyl Trade Revealed

A French professor with unprecedented access to the Sinaloa Cartel’s global drug-trafficking operation has shed light on China’s involvement in the deadly fentanyl trade. Bertrand Monnet, an expert in the economics of organized crime, spent a decade delving into the inner workings of the cartel, tracing the journey of fentanyl from Chinese laboratories to the streets of America.

Monnet’s findings point to China as a major player in the fentanyl epidemic, with the drug being sourced from Chinese laboratories. Legitimate intermediaries, primarily based in China and India, purchase shipments of fentanyl from these legal laboratories. However, they divert a portion of the shipment to sell to the cartel. This intricate network has allowed the Sinaloa Cartel to flood the United States with this lethal narcotic.

The well-documented routes from Chinese laboratories to Mexican drug gangs have long been a concern for the United States. The Biden administration has been pressuring China to take more decisive action in curbing the export of fentanyl-related items. A recent agreement between President Biden and President Xi Jinping aims to address this issue, with China pledging to crack down on specific chemical companies involved in fentanyl production.

However, Monnet argues that China has been dragging its feet for far too long. As a dictatorship, the Chinese authorities possess extensive knowledge about every company and its production. Monnet questions why the Chinese intelligence services have not taken more proactive measures to monitor and control the production and shipment of fentanyl.

While Monnet dismisses the notion that China intentionally weaponizes the fentanyl epidemic against the United States, he emphasizes that China has a responsibility to address this crisis. He believes that China does not have any interest in poisoning American society and destabilizing the U.S., as it goes against their behavior and actions.

The article highlights the urgent need for China to take more decisive action in stemming the flow of fentanyl into the United States. With the Biden administration allocating a significant budget to combat drug trafficking, the pressure on China to cooperate intensifies.

As the world grapples with the devastating consequences of the fentanyl trade, the revelations from Monnet’s research shed light on the complex web of international drug trafficking.
