Inmate Convicted of Killing Kristin Smart Stabbed in Prison, Investigated as Attempted Homicide

In a shocking turn of events, Paul Flores, the man convicted of killing Kristin Smart, was stabbed by another inmate at Pleasant Valley State Prison in Coalinga, California. The incident, which occurred on Wednesday at 3:27 p.m., is now being investigated as an attempted homicide.

Flores, 47, was sentenced to 25 years to life in state prison for the first-degree murder of Smart, a Cal Poly San Luis Obispo student who went missing over 25 years ago. The attack on Flores comes just eight months after he was previously stabbed in the neck by another inmate, Jason Budrow, who is serving two life sentences without the possibility of parole for separate murders, including that of the notorious “I-5 Strangler,” Roger Reece Kibbe.

According to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR), prison staff witnessed the stabbing on the recreation yard and promptly intervened without the use of force. Two inmate-manufactured weapons were recovered from the scene. Flores, who sustained injuries, was immediately transported to an outside medical facility for further treatment. He has since returned to the prison and is currently in fair condition. Fortunately, no other individuals, whether staff or incarcerated, were harmed during the incident.

The identity of the inmate who attacked Flores has not been disclosed, and they have been placed in restricted housing as the investigation unfolds. The CDCR’s investigative services unit is actively looking into the matter, and the Office of the Inspector General has been notified. However, no additional details have been released by the authorities regarding the incident.

It remains unclear whether the assailant in this recent attack is the same person who stabbed Flores last August. The previous attack resulted in Flores being hospitalized for two days.

Paul Flores was arrested in 2021 following the release of the “Your Own Backyard” podcast series by Chris Lambert, a San Luis Obispo County resident. The podcast shed new light on Smart’s disappearance, leading to Flores’ arrest. Despite his conviction, Smart’s body has never been found.

Flores’ attorney, Harold Mesick, could not be reached for comment. However, it has been reported that Mesick plans to request a transfer for Flores to another correctional facility.
