An Indiana woman, identified as 20-year-old Kasia Shelton of Muncie, has been arrested for allegedly stealing a Kia from a car dealership. Shelton reportedly took the vehicle to drive to Indianapolis for a job interview as an exotic dancer. According to court documents, Shelton did not take the matter seriously and seemed unaware of the consequences of her actions.
The theft was reported by an employee at the Muncie car dealership on Monday. The employee stated that Shelton had visited the dealership and asked to test drive a 2013 Kia Optima. While the employee was occupied with phone calls, Shelton allegedly drove off in the vehicle.
Police used surveillance cameras to track the stolen car, observing it traveling south towards Indianapolis and later returning to Muncie. Investigators connected Shelton to the theft after discovering that she had filled out a form on the dealership’s website to purchase another vehicle prior to stealing the Kia.
Officers visited Shelton’s residence, where she initially provided false information about her identity. However, she admitted to stealing the car after being confronted with evidence. Shelton claimed she did not understand the severity of her actions since she had “returned” the vehicle by leaving it in a mall parking lot adjacent to the dealership, with the keys still inside.
Shelton has been arrested on preliminary charges of auto theft and identity deception, both of which are felonies. If convicted, she could face up to two and a half years in prison.
