Hollywood Therapist Amie Harwick’s Murder: Roommate Recounts Nightmarish Attack

It has been nearly four years since the tragic murder of Hollywood therapist Amie Harwick on February 15, 2020. In a chilling account, Harwick’s roommate, Michael Herman, has come forward to share the horrifying details of that fateful night. Speaking to “48 Hours” correspondent Erin Moriarty, Herman reveals the harrowing experience of trying to save his friend’s life.

Herman vividly recalls being abruptly awakened by bloodcurdling screams in the early morning hours after Valentine’s Day. Rushing upstairs, he heard the sound of choking and desperately called out to Harwick. Unable to find his phone, Herman ran to their neighbor’s house for help, but no one answered. Eventually, he managed to use a stranger’s phone on the street to call for assistance.

When the LAPD arrived at the scene, they discovered Harwick gravely injured beneath her third-story balcony. A peculiar clue was found on the balcony—a syringe filled with a mysterious yellowish-brown substance. Investigators also uncovered evidence of an intruder, including a shattered window of a French door. Despite their efforts, Harwick succumbed to her injuries at the hospital.

Herman, burdened with survivor’s guilt, made the right decisions in the face of such a traumatic event, according to Harwick’s parents. The police body camera footage captured the chaos and urgency as officers tried to piece together what had transpired. Initially, there were doubts about the nature of the incident, with the discovery of the syringe leading investigators to consider the possibility of an accident or suicide.

However, as the investigation progressed, the broken window on the ground floor and the blood nearby became crucial evidence. It was at this point that Herman mentioned Harwick’s ex-boyfriend, Gareth Pursehouse, who she had previously obtained a restraining order against. Detectives quickly identified Pursehouse as a suspect and arrested him within 13 hours of Harwick’s death.

Further examination of Pursehouse’s troubled past revealed a history of violence and multiple police reports filed by Harwick. She had endured incidents of choking, suffocation, and physical assault during their tumultuous relationship. Despite her efforts to distance herself from him, Pursehouse continued to harass and intimidate Harwick.

Amie Harwick’s parents, Penny and Tom Harwick, were devastated by the news of their daughter’s murder. They remember her as a vibrant and determined individual who had pursued a career as a therapist. Amie’s passion for heavy metal music and her ability to connect with people made a lasting impact on those around her.
