Hit-and-Run Crash Claims Life of 5-Year-Old Boy, Injures Grandmother in Gardena

A tragic hit-and-run incident in Gardena has resulted in the death of a 5-year-old boy, identified as Patrick Chacon, and left his grandmother injured. The incident occurred at approximately 10:30 a.m. on Sunday when the pair was walking in the crosswalk at the intersection of Marine and Budlong avenues. According to authorities, a car struck them before fleeing the scene.

Upon arrival, responding officers discovered the two pedestrians lying on the roadway. Tragically, Patrick succumbed to his injuries at the scene, as confirmed by the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner. His grandmother was immediately transported to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.

Mourners have since gathered at the intersection to create a memorial in honor of young Patrick, paying their respects to the innocent life lost in this senseless tragedy.

Earlier on the same day, another pedestrian fatality occurred in Gardena, less than two miles away. In this separate incident, a female driver struck and killed a pedestrian at the intersection of Vermont Avenue and El Segundo Boulevard around 4 a.m. Unlike the hit-and-run incident involving Patrick and his grandmother, the driver involved in this case remained at the scene.

The Gardena Police Department is actively investigating both incidents and seeking any information that may lead to the identification and apprehension of the hit-and-run driver responsible for Patrick’s death.
