High-Speed Interstate Bust Uncovers Massive Drug Trafficking Operation

In a heart-pounding operation on Interstate 5, federal drug investigators successfully intercepted a major drug trafficking operation, resulting in the arrest of a 22-year-old driver and the seizure of over 200 pounds of methamphetamine. The daring bust unfolded on a dark Sunday night, as members of the Westside Interagency Task Force and the Drug Enforcement Administration meticulously executed their plan.

Acting on a tip from federal drug investigators, officers set up surveillance along the freeway, strategically positioning themselves between Salem and Tualatin. Their target: a beige 2016 Chevrolet Malibu with a temporary Washington license plate. The suspect vehicle, driven by Juan Manuel Berrelleza Levya, was about to become the center of a high-stakes operation.

As the Chevrolet Malibu sped northbound, officers observed it exceeding the speed limit and changing lanes without signaling. The driver’s reckless behavior only heightened their suspicions. With adrenaline pumping through their veins, the officers initiated a daring traffic stop in the Wilsonville area.

However, the driver seemed determined to evade capture. Ignoring the officers’ commands to pull over, Berrelleza Levya continued driving until officers had no choice but to drive up alongside the vehicle. It was a tense moment, with the suspect’s intentions unclear. But the officers’ training and quick thinking prevailed.

A police drug detection dog named Mando was deployed, and his keen senses immediately alerted to the presence of narcotics in the trunk of the Chevrolet Malibu. The officers wasted no time in searching the vehicle, uncovering a hidden cache of drugs concealed in a large suitcase, a duffle bag, and a black trash bag. The astonishing find amounted to a staggering 207 pounds of methamphetamine, along with an additional 2.2 pounds of heroin.

Berrelleza Levya, a Mexican national who had entered the United States just seven months prior, confessed to his involvement in a drug trafficking organization. He admitted to being paid monthly for his services and revealed that he had picked up the drugs in California. The audacious driver confessed to making regular drug shipments to Portland, his current place of residence, after procuring the illicit substances from out of state.

Appearing in federal court in Portland, Berrelleza Levya faced charges of conspiring to possess and possessing with intent to distribute methamphetamine and heroin. U.S. Magistrate Judge Stacie F. Beckerman ordered him to remain in custody pending trial, recognizing the severity of the charges and the potential danger posed by his alleged involvement in the drug trade.

The successful interception of this massive drug trafficking operation is a testament to the dedication and expertise of the law enforcement agencies involved. Their tireless efforts have undoubtedly dealt a significant blow to the illicit drug trade in the region, making our streets safer and protecting our communities from the devastating effects of addiction.

As the investigation continues, authorities will undoubtedly delve deeper into the intricate web of drug trafficking, seeking to dismantle the organization responsible for this audacious operation. The battle against drug trafficking is far from over, but this recent victory serves as a powerful reminder that law enforcement remains vigilant and committed to safeguarding our society from the perils of the drug trade.
