Harvey Weinstein Hospitalized Again for COVID-19 and Other Health Conditions

Former Hollywood movie mogul Harvey Weinstein has been hospitalized once again, according to records from the New York Corrections Department. The 72-year-old, who is awaiting retrial on rape charges, was transferred from Rikers Island jail complex to a locked ward at Bellevue Hospital. His representative, Juda Engelmayer, confirmed that Weinstein is currently receiving treatment for COVID-19, double pneumonia, and various other health conditions, including diabetes, high blood pressure, spinal stenosis, and fluid on his heart and lungs.

Weinstein’s health information was disclosed by his prison consultant, Craig Rothfeld, who expressed gratitude towards the officers, doctors, and nurses in the city’s corrections and public hospital systems for facilitating his immediate transfer to the Bellevue Hospital Prison Ward. Engelmayer did not respond to requests for comment from The Times.

This is not the first time Weinstein has been admitted to Bellevue Hospital. In late April, he was hospitalized after his 2020 rape conviction was overturned by an appeals court. Prosecutors have requested a retrial in September, and Weinstein, despite his hospitalization, attended a preliminary hearing in May. Defense attorney Arthur Aidala assured that Weinstein’s mental abilities were unaffected, describing him as “sharp as a tack.”

Reports later emerged alleging that Weinstein was receiving special treatment at Bellevue, leading to his removal from the medical center. The disgraced producer was initially sentenced to 23 years in prison in New York in 2020 for assaulting Mimi Haley and Jessica Mann. However, the state appellate court overturned the conviction, citing prejudiced handling of the case by the trial judge.

Weinstein’s retrial in New York depends on the willingness of the women who accused him of assault to testify again. While Haley is still considering it, prosecutors have stated that Mann is prepared to testify. A date for the retrial is expected to be set after Labor Day. Weinstein is scheduled to return to court on August 7, as per jail records.
