A tragic incident unfolded at Joel Osteen’s Lakewood Church in Houston on Sunday when a 36-year-old woman, identified as Genesse Ivonne Moreno, opened fire before being fatally shot by security officers. The shooter, who had a history of mental illness, also left her 7-year-old son critically injured with a gunshot wound to the head.
According to Houston police, the incident occurred just before 2 p.m. when Moreno engaged in a shootout with two off-duty police officers working as security at the megachurch. The chaos that ensued during the shooting left the congregation in a state of terror and confusion.
Paula Laverde, a witness to the incident, shared her harrowing experience, recounting how she heard the initial shot and then three more. As panic set in, Laverde and others began praying fervently for protection as they sought to escape the gunfire. Despite the fear, Laverde found solace in her faith, emphasizing how it grew stronger amid the chaos.
Authorities confirmed that Moreno acted alone in carrying out the shooting and commended the swift response of security personnel and first responders. A 57-year-old man was also wounded in the incident but has since been released from the hospital.
The injured child, however, remains in critical condition, fighting for his life. The tragedy has shaken the congregation of Lakewood Church, one of the largest churches in the United States, sparking discussions about the need for enhanced security measures at religious institutions.
Joel Osteen, a prominent televangelist and pastor of Lakewood Church, expressed his condolences to those affected by the tragedy. He urged his congregation to come together in prayer and support for the victims and their families during this difficult time.
