A gunman, identified as Samson Lucas Bariah Fussner, 28, of Milton, Florida, was shot and killed by Yellowstone National Park rangers after he opened fire at the entrance of a dining facility in the park. The incident occurred on Thursday morning, prompting the closure of Canyon Lodge, a complex of hotel rooms, cabins, and dining facilities.
According to park officials, Fussner had earlier held a woman at gunpoint and revealed his intention to carry out a mass shooting. The woman reported that Fussner threatened to kill her and others, including targeting July 4 events outside the park. Law enforcement rangers were alerted to the situation and began searching for Fussner.
Around 8 a.m. on Thursday, law enforcement rangers encountered Fussner as he approached and fired upon a service entrance to the Canyon Lodge dining facility. In response, several rangers fired at Fussner, resulting in his death at the scene. No other injuries were reported.
Fussner was an employee of Xanterra Parks and Resorts, the primary concessionaire for Yellowstone’s facilities. The FBI is currently investigating the incident. As per National Park Service policy, the law enforcement rangers involved in the shooting have been placed on paid administrative leave while the investigation takes place.
Yellowstone Superintendent Cam Sholly commended the heroic actions of the law enforcement rangers, stating that their swift response saved many lives. The closure of certain areas within Canyon Lodge remains in effect, while the investigation continues.
