Gunman Attempts to Assassinate Former President Trump at Pennsylvania Rally, Killing One Spectator

A 20-year-old Pennsylvania man, identified as Thomas Matthew Crooks, was suspected to have been the gunman who attempted to assassinate former President Donald Trump at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. The incident occurred on Saturday evening, resulting in the death of at least one spectator. Crooks, who was killed at the scene, was a resident of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, located approximately ten miles south of Pittsburgh.

Law enforcement agencies, including the FBI, are currently investigating the motive behind the assassination attempt. Special Agent in Charge Kevin Rojek stated that investigators are working tirelessly to identify the motive, but no concrete information has been established thus far. Crooks, a registered Republican voter, graduated from high school in Pennsylvania in 2022.

The firearm used in the attack was legally purchased by Crooks’ father, according to an urgent trace conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). The weapon was recovered at the scene. The U.S. Secret Service confirmed that Trump was unharmed, as a Secret Service counter-sniper swiftly neutralized the suspect.

The chaotic scene unfolded shortly after Trump took the stage at around 6 p.m. on Saturday. The suspect, positioned on the roof of a nearby building outside the security perimeter, fired shots from a considerable distance. One bullet struck Trump in his right ear, but he remained safe under the protection of the Secret Service.

Law enforcement officials took several hours to publicly identify Crooks as the suspect due to the absence of any identification on his person. Biometric confirmation, including DNA analysis, was necessary to establish his identity. It remains unclear whether Crooks acted alone, and investigators are actively determining if any other individuals were involved.

Bethel Park School District, where Crooks graduated from high school, expressed its cooperation with the ongoing investigation and extended condolences to the family of the deceased spectator. The FBI has urged anyone with relevant information, photos, or videos to come forward.
