Gun-Wielding Assault Suspect Shot Dead by NYPD-Federal Task Force in Manhattan Eyeglasses Store

A 25-year-old assault suspect, identified as Devon Allen, was fatally shot by members of a joint NYPD-federal task force inside Maximeyes Optical, an eyeglasses store in Manhattan’s Chelsea neighborhood. The incident occurred on Tuesday around 2:45 p.m. during a violent struggle, according to NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny.

Allen, who was wanted for an assault that took place earlier this month, was shot at least three times after brandishing a gun inside the store. He was swiftly transported to a nearby hospital but was pronounced dead upon arrival, Kenny confirmed during a press briefing.

The encounter unfolded when an NYPD lieutenant, NYPD detective, and a Homeland Security investigator were conducting a search in the vicinity. They spotted Allen standing outside the eyeglasses store and witnessed him fleeing into the establishment. The task force members attempted to apprehend him, leading to a violent struggle inside the store. It was during this altercation that Allen produced a firearm, prompting the task force members to discharge their weapons multiple times, ultimately striking him.

One task force member sustained a head injury during the incident and was subsequently taken to a local hospital for treatment. At the scene, authorities recovered a 40-caliber Bersa firearm believed to be in Allen’s possession.

Law enforcement sources revealed that Allen was being sought after allegedly assaulting a deli worker by striking them with a jelly jar on April 7. Records indicate that he had previously served time in upstate New York for attempted murder between 2018 and 2020. Kenny noted that Allen had a history of encounters with law enforcement in the community, and investigators will explore any potential gang affiliations.

Maximeyes Optical, the location where the shooting occurred, did not respond to calls as they went to voicemail on Tuesday evening.
