Gun Battles Erupt in Port-au-Prince, Haiti; Police Stations and Airport Targeted

Gun battles erupted in multiple locations of the Haitian capital, Port-au-Prince, on Thursday, resulting in the deaths of several police officers and the suspension of dozens of commercial airline flights. The chaos unfolded as police stations and the international airport came under attack, with armed groups launching assaults on state security forces.

At least four police officers, including two women, were killed in an attack on a station near the community of Canaan, according to a police union. The assailants targeted several police stations, setting two of them on fire. In addition, the Toussaint Louverture International Airport was also targeted, with gunfire directed at both the airport and aircraft, leading to the cancellation of international and domestic airline operations.

The attacks were claimed by Jimmy Cherisier, a prominent gang leader known as “Barbecue,” who announced the assault in a social media video just before the gun battles began. Cherisier stated that multiple factions were collaborating to launch attacks on state security forces in an effort to remove Prime Minister Ariel Henry from power. Prime Minister Henry is currently in Kenya, working on finalizing details for the deployment of a foreign armed force to combat gangs in Haiti.

Haiti finds itself engulfed in both a security and political crisis, with armed groups controlling significant portions of the country and inflicting violence on civilians, leading to economic stagnation. Simultaneously, widespread protests have taken place in recent weeks, demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Henry, who assumed power with international backing following the assassination of President Jovenel Moise in July 2021.

The absence of elected officials in Haiti has further exacerbated the crisis, as Prime Minister Henry was expected to hand over power to elected officials by February 7, 2022, as part of a political agreement. However, this transition has yet to occur. Henry’s visit to Kenya aimed to move forward with the deployment of Kenyan police officers to Haiti, despite a previous ruling by a Kenyan court deeming the proposed deployment unconstitutional.

Speaking ahead of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) Summit, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres emphasized the need for a political solution in Haiti, stating that merely increasing police forces would not resolve the underlying issues. On Wednesday, Prime Minister Henry agreed to “share power” with the opposition until fresh elections can be held, although a specific date has not been set.
