Global leaders have expressed concern over an assassination attempt targeting former U.S. President Donald Trump at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. The incident, which occurred on Saturday, left one attendee dead and critically injured two others, shocking the world. Trump’s campaign has confirmed that he is doing “fine” after being whisked off the stage, although the shooting pierced the upper part of his right ear.
The Secret Service reported that they killed the suspected shooter, who attacked from an elevated position outside the rally venue. U.S. authorities are currently investigating the shooting.
Leaders from various countries have condemned the violence and expressed solidarity with the United States. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the attempted assassination as an inexcusable attack on democratic values shared by Australia and the U.S. Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer expressed his appallment and wished Trump a quick recovery, emphasizing that political violence has no place in society. Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva strongly repudiated the attack, calling it unacceptable and urging all defenders of democracy to do the same.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau expressed his disgust at the shooting and extended his thoughts to Trump, the event attendees, and all Americans. The Chinese Foreign Ministry stated that China is concerned about the attack, with President Xi Jinping already sending his regards to Trump. Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala condemned the attack and wished Trump a fast recovery. Egyptian President Abdelfattah El Sissi expressed concern and condemned the attack, emphasizing the need for peaceful and healthy election campaigns. El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele condemned the assassination attempt, stating that violence has no place in a democracy.
Leaders from Estonia, France, Germany, Hungary, India, Israel, Italy, Japan, Mexico, South Korea, Sweden, Taiwan, the Philippines, Ukraine, and the United Kingdom also expressed their condemnation of the attack and their wishes for Trump’s recovery. They all emphasized that political violence has no place in democracies and expressed solidarity with the American people.
