German-Iranian Dissident Jamshid Sharmahd Executed for Leading Terror Operations

Iran has carried out the execution of German-Iranian dissident Jamshid Sharmahd, who was convicted of leading terror operations, according to state media reports. Sharmahd, a US resident, was sentenced to death last year on charges of “corruption on Earth” for his alleged leadership of the pro-monarchist group Kingdom Assembly of Iran, also known as Tondar. Despite denying the accusations and claiming to be only a spokesperson for the group, Sharmahd’s family maintained his innocence.

Sharmahd’s ordeal began in 2020 when he was reportedly abducted by Iranian agents in Dubai and forcibly taken to Iran via Oman. Amnesty International has raised concerns about his treatment, alleging that he was forced to confess and subjected to torture while in detention. The human rights group revealed that Sharmahd had established a website to disseminate statements from the little-known US-based KAI, which aims to restore the monarchy toppled during the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

Iranian authorities, however, asserted that Sharmahd was the leader of Tondar and had orchestrated 23 terror attacks, five of which were successful. Among the attacks attributed to him was the 2008 bombing of a mosque in Shiraz, which claimed the lives of 14 individuals. Germany’s Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock strongly condemned Sharmahd’s sentencing last year, deeming it “absolutely unacceptable.”
