Fulton County DA Fani Willis Defends Relationship with Special Prosecutor in Trump Election Interference Case

Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis took the witness stand on Thursday to address allegations of an improper relationship with special prosecutor Nathan Wade in the Georgia election interference case against former President Donald Trump. Willis vehemently denied the accusations and accused defense attorneys of lying in an attempt to disqualify her and her office from prosecuting the case.

During the evidentiary hearing before Fulton County Judge Scott McAfee, Willis fiercely defended herself against claims made by lawyers representing Trump and his co-defendants. The defense attorneys alleged that Willis engaged in a romantic relationship with Wade, whom she hired to work on the case, and financially benefited from it.

Willis and Wade both testified, providing details about the origins of their relationship, trips they took together, and their finances. They confirmed that their romantic relationship began in early 2022, months after Willis appointed Wade as special prosecutor for the racketeering case involving Trump.

In response to attorney Ashleigh Merchant, who represents co-defendant Michael Roman, Willis criticized the intrusion into her personal life and emphasized that the focus should be on the alleged election interference. She objected to the defense’s attempts to obtain her personal records and called the implications made in court filings about the start of her relationship with Wade “highly offensive.”

Prosecutors from Willis’ office plan to call at least three witnesses, including her father, to testify on Friday. The witnesses will provide further information and answer questions related to the case.

The charges against Trump and his allies stem from accusations of orchestrating a scheme to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election in Georgia. All defendants have pleaded not guilty to the charges.
