Fresno Police Chief Paco Balderrama has resigned following an investigation into allegations of an affair with an officer’s wife. The investigation, which began in February, concluded recently, prompting Balderrama’s resignation, effective July 25. The city of Fresno will now commence a nationwide search for a new police chief.
Mayor Jerry Dyer, speaking at a news conference, stated that the resignation was in the best interest of the community, the police department, and the individuals involved. He cited the intense media scrutiny surrounding the matter at local, state, and federal levels as a contributing factor. Dyer emphasized the importance of maintaining trust within the department and the community.
According to a statement released by the city, Balderrama had informed the mayor and city manager in February about the likelihood of an allegation being made against him regarding an inappropriate off-duty relationship. As a result, he was placed on administrative leave, and an external attorney was hired to conduct an impartial investigation.
Balderrama expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve as Fresno police chief, describing it as the privilege of a lifetime. He thanked the administration and the people of Fresno for their support during challenging times.
The allegations against Balderrama included claims that he abused his position of authority to hinder the career advancement of the officer whose wife he was allegedly involved with. However, City Manager Georgeanne White refuted these allegations, stating that evidence presented during the investigation contradicted them.
Former Fresno police chief Dyer commended Balderrama for his accomplishments during his three-year tenure, including a reduction in violent crime, technological advancements within the department, and successful recruitment efforts.
Balderrama began his law enforcement career in Oklahoma City and served in the Oklahoma City Police Department for 22 years before assuming the role of Fresno police chief in January 2021.
