Former US President Donald Trump was injured in a shooting incident during a campaign rally in Butler City, Pennsylvania. The Republican presidential candidate sustained a gunshot wound to his right ear in what authorities are treating as an assassination attempt. The incident occurred on Saturday, resulting in the death of the suspected shooter, identified as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, and a rally attendee. Two spectators were critically injured.
Trump, 78, was swiftly escorted off the stage, his face streaked with blood, while raising a defiant fist to the crowd. He later confirmed that a bullet had pierced the upper part of his right ear. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has officially labeled the incident as an assassination attempt.
According to the FBI, Crooks fired multiple shots towards the stage from an elevated position outside the rally before being neutralized by Secret Service agents. The US Secret Service confirmed that the suspect was killed during the incident. Local police have identified the deceased rally attendee as a male adult, and two other male adults are currently in critical condition.
World leaders have condemned the assassination attempt, with US President Joe Biden calling for universal condemnation of such acts of violence. Biden, who cut short his weekend trip to return to Washington, DC, will receive an updated briefing from security officials on Sunday morning.
Despite the incident, Trump’s campaign has announced that he will still attend the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee. The former president underwent a precautionary hospital checkup following the shooting.
