Former Spanish Football Federation President Luis Rubiales Banned by FIFA for Three Years

Former Spanish Football Federation President Luis Rubiales has been banned from all football-related activities for three years by FIFA. The ban comes after Rubiales kissed forward Jenni Hermoso on the lips following Spain’s Women’s World Cup final win over England. Hermoso, who stated that the kiss was not consensual, later filed a legal complaint against Rubiales.

FIFA confirmed that the ban was issued for breaching article 13 of its disciplinary code, which relates to offensive behavior and violations of fair play principles. Rubiales had previously been provisionally suspended for 90 days following the incident. The ban remains subject to a possible appeal.

Rubiales, 46, claimed that the kiss was “mutual,” but Hermoso consistently denied this. The incident overshadowed Spain’s historic victory in Sydney, Australia. Following the controversy, a majority of the World Cup-winning squad boycotted the national team until changes were made within the football federation.

Last month, a hearing at the national court in Madrid considered a criminal complaint of sexual assault and coercion against Rubiales. As a result, he was banned from going within 200 meters of Hermoso. Rubiales has denied the allegations.

The actions of Rubiales drew widespread criticism, leading to the dismissal of World Cup-winning manager Jorge Vilda in September. Vilda is also being investigated as part of the criminal case against Rubiales. Despite the controversy, Hermoso returned to the national side in October and scored an 89th-minute winner against Italy.

FIFA emphasized its commitment to respecting and protecting the integrity of all individuals and upholding the basic rules of decent conduct in a statement announcing the ban.
