Former South Shore Pediatrician Faces Rape and Assault Charges

Former South Shore Pediatrician Faces Rape and Assault Charges

Dr. Richard A. Kauff, a former pediatrician at South Shore Medical Center, is facing charges of child rape with force and indecent assault and battery on a child under 14. The charges stem from allegations made by two former patients who claim that Kauff sexually assaulted them during their annual physical exams over 20 years ago.

The accusations came to light when one of the alleged victims posted anonymously in the Facebook group “Mamas of the South Shore,” questioning the normality of a pediatrician inserting fingers into a patient’s vagina during a checkup. This post prompted another woman to come forward with similar experiences. Both women realized that Kauff was the common factor in their stories.

According to the police report, the alleged assaults occurred even when the victims’ parents were present, as Kauff positioned himself in a way that concealed his actions. The women stated that Kauff instructed them to count to three before inserting his fingers, claiming it would feel “like a rocket ship.” They denied having any medical conditions that would require such an examination.

Norwell detectives consulted a pediatric expert who confirmed that an internal pelvic exam is not a routine procedure during a pediatric exam. When contacted by the police, Kauff expressed disbelief and stated that he had practiced medicine for over forty years without any issues.

Kauff, who has not yet entered a plea, is scheduled for arraignment in Hingham District Court on November 20. South Shore Health, the operator of South Shore Medical Center, confirmed that Kauff is no longer affiliated with the practice and expressed deep concern over the allegations. They have pledged full cooperation with any investigation and are prepared to support the victims.
