Former Singapore Transport Minister S Iswaran has been hit with eight additional charges in a corruption case that has sent shockwaves through the city-state’s political landscape. The charges, brought by the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau (CPIB), allege that Iswaran received gifts worth approximately $14,000 from an individual who had business dealings with the Transport Ministry.
Singapore, known for its strict anti-corruption stance, has adopted a zero-tolerance approach towards such offenses. The CPIB emphasized that anyone convicted under section 165 of the Penal Code could face fines, imprisonment of up to two years, or both.
The valuable goods allegedly received by Iswaran include whisky, golf clubs, and a Brompton bicycle, according to local media reports. These charges come on the heels of Iswaran’s previous indictment in January, where he faced 27 corruption charges, most of which were related to gifts received from Malaysian billionaire Ong Beng Seng.
Ong, who played a pivotal role in bringing the Singapore Grand Prix to the city-state during Iswaran’s tenure, is accused of providing the former minister with tickets to West End shows and football matches in exchange for advancing his business interests. Iswaran, who has since stepped down as a Member of Parliament and resigned from the ruling People’s Action Party (PAP), vehemently denied the charges and vowed to clear his name.
Singapore has a reputation for its stringent laws and rigorous enforcement against corruption. In the 2023 Transparency International Corruption Perceptions Index, the country ranked as the fifth-least corrupt nation, following Norway, New Zealand, Finland, and Denmark.
This corruption case involving Iswaran marks the first investigation into a minister since 1986 when then Minister for National Development Teh Cheang Wan was accused of accepting bribes from businesses. However, Teh passed away before charges could be brought against him.
