Former NHL Player Alex Formenton Charged in Alleged Sexual Assault Case Involving Canada’s 2018 World Junior Team

Former NHL player Alex Formenton has turned himself in to the London Police in connection with an ongoing investigation into an alleged sexual assault involving several members of Canada’s 2018 world junior team. Formenton, along with several other players, has been charged, although the specific charges have not been disclosed by his lawyer, Daniel Brown.

Brown, representing Formenton, has stated that his client will vigorously defend his innocence and urges people not to rush to judgment without considering all the evidence. The seriousness of the allegations has prompted Formenton and four other players from the gold medal-winning team to take a leave of absence from their current clubs. This includes NHL players Michael McLeod and Cal Foote of the New Jersey Devils, Carter Hart of the Philadelphia Flyers, and Dillon Dube of the Calgary Flames.

Formenton, who previously played for the Ottawa Senators, had been playing for HC Ambri-Piotta in Switzerland before being granted an indefinite leave of absence for personal reasons and allowed to return to Canada.

The London Police have scheduled a news conference on February 5th to address the situation but have declined to provide further details at this time. The investigation was initiated in 2022 after it was revealed that Hockey Canada had settled a lawsuit with a woman who claimed she was sexually assaulted by eight members of the gold medal-winning team during a gala event.

The NHL has also launched its own investigation into the matter and has pledged to make the findings public. The league’s involvement highlights the gravity of the situation and the importance of addressing any potential misconduct within the sport.

As the case unfolds, the hockey community and the public await further updates and hope for a thorough and fair resolution. The allegations have sent shockwaves through the sport, emphasizing the need for accountability and the protection of all individuals involved in hockey.
