The death of former NFL player Mike Williams is currently under investigation by the Tampa Police Department. Williams, 36, passed away on September 12 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Tampa, two weeks after being injured in a construction accident that left him partially paralyzed. The police probe is focused on the possibility that Williams received unprescribed drugs from an outside party while hospitalized.
The Tampa Police Department stated in an email on Tuesday that they take all allegations of criminal activity seriously and are actively investigating the case. The investigation was initially reported by the Tampa Bay Times. The Hillsborough County Medical Examiner’s office is also conducting its own investigation into Williams’ death.
Williams was a fourth-round draft pick for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2010, following a successful college career at Syracuse. During his rookie season, he recorded 65 receptions for 964 yards and 11 touchdowns. He started in 52 out of the 54 games he played over four seasons with the Buccaneers. In 2014, Williams was traded to the Buffalo Bills, his hometown team, where he played for one season. He concluded his career with the Kansas City Chiefs during the 2016 offseason.
