Former NBA Players Convicted in Multi-Million Dollar Insurance Fraud Scheme

Glen “Big Baby” Davis, a former Boston Celtics forward, and ex-Detroit Piston Will Bynum were convicted by a New York jury for their roles in defrauding the NBA Players’ Health and Benefit Welfare Plan. The scheme, involving more than 20 individuals, many of whom are ex-NBA players, resulted in over $5 million in losses through fraudulent dental and medical claims.

Terrence Williams, identified as the scheme’s ringleader and a 2009 first-round draft pick of the New Jersey Nets, was previously sentenced to ten years in prison. U.S. Attorney Damian Williams stated that this conviction underscores that no level of fame or sports achievement exempts individuals from criminal charges for fraud.

The fraudulent scheme involved doctors and dentists who created fake invoices submitted for insurance reimbursement. Glen Davis, notable for leading Louisiana State to the 2006 NCAA championship game and being part of the Celtics’ 2008 NBA championship team, and Will Bynum, with an NBA career spanning four seasons across various teams, now face the consequences of their involvement in this extensive fraud.
