Former Dodgers Pitcher Julio Urías Placed on Probation for Domestic Battery

Former Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Julio Urías has been placed on probation for three years and ordered to undergo a domestic violence treatment program after pleading no contest to a charge of misdemeanor domestic battery against his wife, Daisy Urías. The incident occurred outside BMO Stadium in Los Angeles, following an LAFC game in September.

According to a report from the Exposition Park Department of Public Safety, a person alerted the police about a physical altercation involving a man and a woman. Upon arrival, officers determined that a physical altercation had indeed taken place between Julio Urías and his wife. The 27-year-old left-handed pitcher, known as “El Culichi” from Sinaloa, Mexico, was subsequently taken into custody and released the following morning after posting $50,000 bail.

Urías faced multiple charges, including one count of spousal battery, two counts of domestic battery involving a dating relationship, one count of false imprisonment, and one count of assault. However, on Wednesday, he pleaded no contest to one count of domestic battery, resulting in the dismissal of the other four charges, as per court records.

In response to his plea, a Los Angeles Superior Court judge has ordered Urías to enroll in and finance a yearlong domestic violence treatment program, attending all counseling sessions. Instead of serving jail time, he has been placed on three years of probation, during which he is prohibited from possessing, using, or owning any dangerous weapons. Additionally, Urías is forbidden from using or threatening violence against anyone during this period.

Urías, who signed with the Dodgers in 2012 and made his major league debut in 2016, played a significant role in the team’s victory in the 2020 World Series. He closed out the series by striking out Tampa Bay Rays slugger Willy Adames, securing the Dodgers’ first championship since 1988. However, this recent incident marks the second time Urías has faced legal trouble related to domestic violence. In 2019, he was suspended for 20 games after being arrested, though not charged, on suspicion of misdemeanor domestic violence.

Following his arrest in September, Urías spent the remainder of the season on administrative leave before his contract expired in early November. He currently remains a free agent, boasting a career record of 60 wins and 25 losses in 158 appearances.

  1. This is absolutely disgusting and unacceptable. It is disheartening to see yet another professional athlete involved in a domestic violence case. Julio Urías should be held accountable for his actions and face serious consequences, rather than just being placed on probation for a mere three years. Domestic violence is a serious crime that should never be taken lightly. It is deeply concerning that someone who is supposed to be a role model for others would engage in such despicable behavior. It is high time that the sports industry takes
