Former Aurora police officer Douglas Harroun has pleaded guilty to a charge of reckless endangerment in connection with an off-duty assault case. The 34-year-old officer entered the plea on Friday, resulting in the dismissal of felony charges of assault and attempting to influence a public servant. Court records indicate that Harroun’s guilty plea was part of a plea agreement.
The incident in question occurred on January 11, 2023, at an apartment complex located in the 15000 block of East Briarwood Circle in Aurora. Witnesses reported that Harroun, while off-duty, punched a disabled woman multiple times in the head and face. The victim, a 49-year-old woman, stated that she was walking her dog when Harroun approached her in a vehicle. Allegedly frustrated by her slow pace due to her physical disability, Harroun revved his engine and came dangerously close to hitting her.
According to the victim’s account, Harroun then exited his car and began yelling at her. In response, she retrieved a can of pepper spray and warned him to back off. However, Harroun proceeded to grab her, forcefully slam her into the ground, and repeatedly punch her. Bystanders witnessing the assault promptly called 911. When some individuals attempted to intervene, Harroun brandished his police badge and falsely claimed that the woman was under arrest.
Harroun’s sentencing for the misdemeanor conviction resulted in a two-year probationary period, as per court records. However, he still faces separate charges related to an on-duty police shooting that occurred in December 2022. In that case, Harroun is charged with two counts of felony assault. The trial for these charges is scheduled for November.
The former officer resigned from the Aurora Police Department on January 30, 2023. Harroun’s attorney has not yet provided a comment regarding the recent guilty plea.
