Former Attorney at Children’s Law Center Charged with Distribution and Possession of Child Pornography

A former supervising attorney at the Children’s Law Center of California, Charles “Chuck” Aghoian, has been charged with three counts of distribution of child pornography and one count of possession of child pornography. The charges were filed on Monday, March 11, following a federal grand jury indictment. Aghoian, 61, pleaded not guilty and was released on bail.

According to the indictment, Aghoian knowingly distributed sexually explicit videos featuring children in December 2020 and January 2021. Additionally, in April 2021, he allegedly possessed images of child sexual abuse victims under the age of 12 on his smartphone.

At the time of the offenses, Aghoian was employed at the Children’s Law Center, a nonprofit organization that provides legal representation for abused, neglected, or abandoned children in foster care. Prior to his legal career, Aghoian had also volunteered as a photography instructor at Maryvale, a children’s charity in Los Angeles County.

The Children’s Law Center had previously praised Aghoian for his volunteer work at Maryvale, where he taught the Fostering Photography program for at least four years. However, both the CLC and Maryvale have since deleted their Facebook posts acknowledging Aghoian’s involvement.

Aghoian’s volunteer work at Maryvale and any other organization was done on his own time and not in partnership with the Children’s Law Center, according to an email statement from the CLC. Maryvale’s president and CEO, Steve Gunther, expressed shock at the child pornography allegations and emphasized the charity’s commitment to protecting its clients.

The CLC learned of the criminal investigation involving Aghoian in 2021 and immediately placed him on administrative leave, prohibiting him from having contact with clients. He was subsequently separated from employment with the CLC. The FBI confirmed that none of the CLC’s clients were subjects of the materials discovered in the investigation.

The CLC emphasized its dedication to protecting children and taking all necessary precautions to ensure the safety and well-being of its clients. All employees undergo rigorous background checks, and client contact protocols prohibit staff from being alone with clients in private settings.

The case against Aghoian highlights the importance of safeguarding vulnerable children and the need for swift and meaningful interventions in cases of child exploitation. The CLC remains committed to its mission of fighting for the protection of all children and prosecuting adult exploiters.

  1. This is absolutely sickening and outrageous! How can someone who was supposed to protect and advocate for children be involved in such a heinous crime? It’s beyond comprehension that Charles “Chuck” Aghoian, a former supervising attorney at the Children’s Law Center of California, could stoop so low.

Child pornography is a despicable and vile act that exploits innocent children and causes immeasurable harm. These children are the most vulnerable members of our society, and it is our duty to
