Florida Siblings, Aged 10 and 11, Drive 200 Miles in Stolen Car; Mother Declines to Press Charges

A 10-year-old boy and his 11-year-old sister from Florida were found driving 200 miles away from their home on Interstate 75 near Gainesville, according to the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office. The incident took place early Thursday morning, four hours after the children’s mother had reported her car stolen and her children missing from their residence in North Port, a city in southwest Florida.

Initially suspecting a car theft, deputies drew their weapons and ordered the occupants to exit the vehicle. They were surprised to find the young siblings inside. A statement from the department said, “Much to their surprise, deputies observed a 10-year-old male driver exit the vehicle along with his 11-year-old sister.”

Upon questioning, the children explained that they were running away to California. The girl was reportedly upset that her mother had confiscated her electronic devices as a punishment for misbehavior. Detectives found no evidence that the children had been mistreated at home.

The mother opted not to press charges, and the children were released into her custody. The names of the family members involved have not been disclosed.
