Firefighters battled a blaze at Hazel Trembath Elementary School in Port Coquitlam on Saturday. The Coquitlam RCMP and Port Coquitlam Fire responded to reports of the fire just after 3:15 a.m. The fire, which is believed to be suspicious, fully engulfed the school. The authorities are investigating the cause of the fire. Fortunately, the school was unoccupied at the time, and there are no reported injuries.
Footage and images posted on social media show the school engulfed in flames, with thick grey and black smoke rising into the air. The Coquitlam RCMP is urging anyone with video surveillance in the area of Hazel Trembath Elementary School during the time of the fire to contact their investigators. They are also seeking information from individuals who were in the vicinity between the late evening of October 13, 2023, and the early morning of October 14, 2023.
Smoke and haze from the fire drifted into nearby neighborhoods, including Burnaby, New Westminster, and parts of Vancouver. The School District 43, in a statement to CityNews, mentioned that they are actively planning to support the students and families of Hazel Trembath Elementary School and will release more information later on Saturday.
