Dr. Adefolalu Funmilola Sherifat, a lecturer in the Department of Biochemistry, School of Life Sciences at the Federal University of Technology (FUT), Minna, Niger State, was found dead at her residence in the Gbaiko area on Sunday, October 29. According to reports, her body was discovered in a pool of blood with a cut throat.
Police Public Relations Officer Wasiu Abiodun confirmed that friends found Dr. Sherifat after being unable to contact her. The discovery was made following concerns from her church members when she didn’t attend Sunday service. Entry to her residence was forced, where she was found with multiple injuries. Two knives with blood stains, suspected to be the weapons used, were recovered from the scene.
The Academic Staff Union of University (ASUU) FUTMinna branch chairman, Prof. Gbolahan Abolarin, also confirmed the incident. The Nigerian Police, Niger State Command, has taken the body for an autopsy and is investigating the circumstances surrounding her death. DSP Wasiu Abiodun stated that further details would be provided upon conclusion of the investigation.
Local sources, preferring anonymity, revealed that Dr. Sherifat’s husband, also a professor, had previously passed away. They added that she was living with a female house help, who was reportedly laid off last Friday. The community and university are awaiting further developments as the investigation continues.
